UNDRSTATEMNT started in a small basement downtown Calgary in 2019, founded by Avery Casem and Justav Flores. What began as a shared dream between two friends who met at Second Mile Barbershop has grown into one of Calgary's most respected barbershops. The name represents the philosophy — let the work speak for itself. Every barber in the crew shares this mindset: show up, do exceptional work, and let the results tell the story.

I'm a barber with 13 years of experience, originally from Winnipeg but now proudly based in Calgary. I started off cutting hair for my friends in my mom's basement for the price of $5. Cutting hair has always felt natural to me and it quickly became something I'm most passionate about. I've had the opportunity to work and learn at two different shops, under the guidance of my family friend and mentor, Bless Capulong. At Lokal Fokas and Second Mile Barbershop, I met Justav, Martin, and Jheremy, and we became like family. Justav and I shared a dream of creating our own brand and shop, which we made a reality in 2019 with Undrstatemnt. We started in a small basement downtown and eventually moved to our current location, where we continue to do what we love every day.
Justav Flores
Co-Founder & Barber
I started at a shop called Second Mile with a lot of the guys I am working with today. The shop was owned by Bless Capulong who was my first real mentor in this game. Growing a steady clientele, Avery and I decided to branch out and start the brand in a small basement in September 2019.
